I N T R O d U C T I O N Georgia is situated in the central and western parts of the South Caucasus re-gion, between the Black and Caspian Seas. It is a mountainous country with three major orographic systems within its borders: the mountain systems of the Greater and Lesser Caucasus; the intermontane depressions (Colchian, Kartlian and Alaza-nian); and the South Georgian volcanic highland (Fig.1).
